A Birthday Prayer
As I am preparing this post for my Blog, Hurricane Irma is creating a strong destructive path through our country, and she will leave her mark in history that cannot and will not be forgotten. The number of lives, property and possessions that are destroyed cannot be measured with money, words, or emotions.
Just as Irma will and has caused devastation beyond our human ability to fully understand, the Hurricane Irma’s in our personal lives can and do have lasting scars as well.
God’s Word is not just stories we read. 2 Peter 1:19-21 – And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation. For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
As the reader to this post, you probably are asking what Hurricane Irma and God’s reliable Word have to do with a Birthday Prayer.
The Book of Ruth is the story of God’s grace in the midst of overwhelming crisis and deep despair. Naomi and Ruth both experienced astounding loss, grief, sorrow, and brokenness. Through this Book, we see God’s faithfulness, care and protection over Naomi and Ruth.
At first Naomi felt bitter, but her faith in God was still alive. She trusted God and acknowledged His goodness even in the midst of crushing storms.
Just like Naomi, I have felt bitterness because of the massive hurricane that has hit our family, and just like Naomi, I pray that my daughter-in-law that has the character traits of Ruth will remember the love and devotion we have for her.
When the hurricanes of our lives forcefully over take us for a season, we must remember like Naomi and Ruth that no matter how devastating our present situation may be our hope is in God. God restores completely.
Deuteronomy 6:5 – Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
Colossians 3:12-17 – Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which bind them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Love is the greatest blessing. Happy Birthday!
