Afflicted, Seeking The Lord’s Heartbeat

There are times of great anguish and sorrow in our hearts because of the affliction of an adversary. In these times of emotional distress, God’s voice can be heard in His Word to guide us in these heartbreaking times.

1 Samuel 1:1-20 – v-6-7 – And because the Lord had closed her womb, her rival kept provoking her in order to irritate her. This went on year after year. Whenever Hannah went up to the house of the Lord, her rival provoked her till she wept and would not eat.

Hannah did not retaliate against her rival, Peninnah.. She did not let the venomous poison spewing out of her rival’s mouth cause her to stop seeking the Lord in her time of torment. Hannah brought her problem honestly before God.

1 Samuel 1:10In bitterness of soul, Hannah wept much and prayed to the Lord.

Bobby and I have two Peninnah’s in our lives and they have also caused serious grief to us as well to others.

These two individuals are spiteful, hateful, hostile and full of malice. They, just like Peninnah was to Hannah, are our adversaries. They, just like Peninnah, live up to the name of venomous. They have set out to make our life a living nightmare.

These two individuals were severely wounded during childhood. The emotional wounds that they have encountered have made them resentful, cold, callous, vengeful and hypocritical liars, whose conscience has been seared as with a hot iron. Their energy to wound others is fueled by their wounds that have never healed.

Bobby and I came along side these two individuals with compassion, kindness, gentleness, love, respect, patience, faithfulness, generosity, truth and trust year after year. We took them to God’s Word day after day to show them how only Jesus could heal their wounds.

Isaiah 53:4-5 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows… But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.

Just as Peninnah was bitter, jealous, unforgiving, cold, hard and callous and had no remorse on the pain she was inflicting on Hannah, these two individuals have no remorse for the sorrow, grief, brokenness and distress they have caused us and others.

These two individuals have engaged for so long in this pattern of behavior that it is ingrained in their mind, soul, spirit and body. They are in complete denial of the pain and destruction they have done, are doing, and will do in the future. They have deliberately violated their conscience, so as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

However, just as Hannah, God has given promises that He will vindicate us. Psalm 37: 1-6Don’t worry about the wicked or envy those who do wrong. For like grass, they soon fade away. Like spring flowers, they soon wither. Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you. He will make your innocence radiate like the dawn, and the justice of your cause will shine like the noonday sun. (NLT)  Isaiah 54: 17 –“no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the Lord.

God has also given promises that He will restore that which the enemies have tried to kill, steal and destroy.  Proverbs 22:6, Isaiah 61:1-3, Joel 2:25, Luke 15:11-32, Philippians 4:10, 2 Timothy 2:26, James 5:16, 19-20, and 1 John 3:9
